For his significant contributions to the field of retinal imaging and diseases, Prithvi Ramtohul, MD, received the second Ramin Tadayoni Award at the European Society of Retina Specialists (Euretina) Congress in Paris.
Dr. Ramtohul is an attending physician in the retinal division at Aix-Marseille University Hospital North, France, and a PhD candidate at the French research organization Inserm in Marseille. His research centers on advancing the understanding of retinal disease pathophysiology through multimodal imaging. He has authored 111 peer-reviewed publications, including several landmark first-author studies that described novel OCT biomarkers such as bacillary layer detachment (BALAD) and the angular sign of Henle fiber layer hyperreflectivity (ASHH), as well as newly recognized retinal conditions including Stellate Multiform Amelanotic Choroidopathy (SMACH) and Multizonal Outer Retinopathy and Retinal Pigment Epitheliopathy (MORR). Dr. Ramtohul’s work has earned multiple honors, including the Gabriel Coscas Award from the French Retina Society. He is currently studying the long-lasting plasticity of intrinsic neuronal excitability in retinal ganglion cells.
Established in memory of the late Ramin Tadayoni, MD, PhD, who passed away unexpectedly last year, the award is intended to recognize exceptional retina research and support emerging talent. It includes a €30,000 ($34,900) research grant and an additional €5,000 award ($5,800) for the recipient. As a fellow at Hospital Lariboisière in Paris, Dr. Ramtohul was mentored by Dr. Tadayoni.
The Ramin Tadayoni Award is supported by a grant from Oculis Holding AG, for whom Dr. Tadayoni served as chief scientific officer. He also was president of Euretina and a former editorial board member of Retinal Physician. RP
